Africa

Led by African SDBs, for SDBs

Launched in Abidjan on October 19, 2022 during the third edition of the Finance in Common Summit (FiCS).

The Alliance aims at strengthening the role of financial intermediaries and public development banks in financing a sustainable and just urban transition in Africa.

The Alliance represents a strategic space for dialogue with peers, development institutions, governments, local and regional governments, and technical and financial partners in Africa.

The Alliance complements the work of existing African networks.

Support the diversification of financing sources available to SDBs as well as the technical and financial services provided by SDBs

Align SDBs’ strategies, standards, initiatives, investments, and portfolios with global agendas such as the UN 2030 Agenda and SDGs, the New Urban Agenda (NUA), the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA) and the Paris Agreement

Promote SDBs’ sustainable investments through urban and territorial development projects portfolios and boost the financial urban subnational markets

PEER-TO-PEER EXCHANGES
KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION

Bring together African Ministers, representatives of the African Union, CEOs of Public Development Banks and African Mayors & Governors, to demonstrate leadership.

Formulate a strong orientation on the concrete solutions to redesign the global financial architecture while supporting effective multilevel cooperation.

Discuss the specific instruments and policy interventions that need to be developed to stimulate international climate investment in Africa.

Organize online events tailored to the needs of SDBs expressed throughout bilateral calls with the Alliance’s Secretariat, FMDV.

  • Organization of a thematic meeting about “Taking stock and sharing and sharing experiences on financial intermediation in Africa”.

Facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues & partnerships and learn from each other.

  • Mapping of financial intermediaries in Africa.
  • Promotion of innovative mechanisms put in place by members of the Alliance to attract climate finance.
  • Valorization of best practices from members of the Alliance.

Feed a call for strengthening the overall legal and institutional framework for subnational lending.
Review current practices of the development finance community.
Define and propose a typology of financial intermediaries in Africa.

  • Contribution to the recent publication: “Bridging Africa’s urban infrastructure gap: financial intermediaries facilitating cities’ access to debt finance in Africa” by ODI, with FMDV.

The Alliance Secretariat is managed by FMDV, the Global Fund for Cities Development.

Resources of the Alliance come from FMDV, grants and voluntary contributions from members and international partners.

FMDV calls members of the Alliance to voluntarily participate and support one or several activities of the Alliance’s Action Plan, from financial to human and material resources.
